Vapor Barrier Protects Stockton Springs, ME Crawlspace
Challenge
A homeowner in Stockton Springs, ME had started to notice a smell emanating from their crawlspace. The damp space was never a problem for the homeowner before, but this smell was not worth putting up with. To waterproof the space and to eliminate the smell, the homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
Once we arrived at the home, we began immediately by installing a SmartSump sump pump in the floor of the crawlspace. This will give any standing water a wat out. This will help greatly in reducing the amount of moisture within the space. The water collected in the sump is forced out of the home through a PVC discharge line. Following this line outside, we made two additions to help keep things running smoothly. The first was an IceGuard pipe piece which has holes to prevent an overflow. In the event of a blockage in the line, any water that is backing up towards the sump will be able to escape through the holes in the IceGuard. This line was then ended with a LawnScape discharge point where the water is let out onto the ground a distance from the home.
Next, we began work on installing a vapor barrier to keep moisture from reaching the atmosphere within the crawlspace. We started this by laying a Drainage Matting across the space. This will hold moisture beneath itself, while still allowing the moisture to flow and drain away through the SmartSump. Finally, we encapsulated the crawlspace with a CleanSpace liner. This liner is a thin plastic material which covers every wall as well as the floor.
This completely seals moisture out of the crawlspace, maintaining a dry, healthy atmosphere.
With their new vapor barrier in place and a sump to remove the water, the smell should be eliminated in no time. This homeowner can rest assured their crawlspace will stay healthy and dry.
