Proper Vapor Barrier Installation Saves Greenwood, ME Crawlspace
Challenge
A wet crawlspace can cause many problems for a homeowner. This homeowner in Greenwood, ME was having an exceptionally hard time keeping up with their wet crawlspace. Without a vapor barrier in place, there was no way they would keep up. They called TC Hafford Basement Systems to finally get the job done.
Solution
Once our crew arrived at the home, they began work on waterproofing the crawlspace. First, they needed to give the water a place to exit through. The meant installing a SmartSump in the natural low-point of the floor to collect any water on the ground. This collected water would then be forced out of the home through a PVC discharge line. Outside the home, this discharge line received two key additions to help the process flow smoothly. The first was an IceGuard, which is a segment of pipe that will allow trapped water to escape the pipe and prevent overflows in the sump. The second was a LawnScape discharge point where the water exits onto the ground a safe distance from the home.
Next, to begin the vapor barrier, we laid down a Drainage Matting. This is a specially designed mat which holds moisture beneath it, while allowing it to move around, and flow to the sump for removal. This helps keep moisture out of the air. We finished the waterproofing of the space by encapsulating the crawlspace with a CleanSpace liner. This sheet of plastic completely locks out any moisture entering through the floor or walls. Now no moisture will be able to find its way into the atmosphere, and will be forced out of the home through the SmartSump. This crawlspace should now remain dry and moisture free.
With a proper vapor barrier in place, this crawlspace will no longer find itself flooded after a rainfall. This homeowner can now rest assured they do not need to worry about moisture problems.
