Troy, ME Crawlspace Saved From Mold Problem With CleanSpace
Challenge
A couple in Troy, ME was having trouble with the crawlspace in their home. It would emanate a bad smell throughout the home, and they needed it looked at. After calling TC Hafford Basement Systems, our crew was at the home to help the crawlspace of this couple.
Solution
Without a vapor barrier or any way to remove moisture, this space was beginning to have a mold problem. To stop this, we began by installing a SmartSump sump pump in the floor. This pump will take in any pooled-up water of the floor of the crawlspace and force it up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. The line then received two attachments to assist the removal. The first was the IceGuard, which was attached just as the line exits the home. The IceGuard is a piece of pipe built with holes, to allow for trapped water to escape through. This prevents an overflow if the line becomes clogged. The last attachment was the LawnScape discharge point where the water exits the line a safe distance from the home.
Next, we needed to give the crawlspace a proper vapor barrier to prevent any moisture from further affecting the space. We began by laying a Drainage Matting on the floor. This mat seals any moisture beneath itself, allowing it to flow without allowing it to enter the air. This keeps the water exiting through the sump without adverse effects on the crawlspace. We then finished the project by encapsulating the space with a CleanSpace liner. The CleanSpace is a thin plastic sheet that locks moisture out. This prevents any moisture from entering the atmosphere from either the walls or the floor. This new vapor barrier will ensure any water within the crawlspace is forced out through the SmartSump.
With a system in place to both keep water out and remove the water inside, this Troy, ME crawlspace will now become odor free. Without any moisture to survive on, any mold within the space will die off.
