Sullivan, ME Crawlspace Receives Proper Vapor Barrier
Challenge
A homeowner in Sullivan, ME was suffering from a wet crawlspace. The space had been giving off a nasty smell for weeks. Tired of living in these conditions, the homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems to have it taken care of.
Solution
Without a vapor barrier in place, or a drain for the water, it was no surprise the space would retain water after a rain. To begin the waterproofing on the space, we installed a SuperSump sump pump to remove pools of water. This pump will take in the water gathering on the floor, and force it up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. The water passes through an IceGuard section of piping which has built in holes. These holes only allow water to escape the pipe when a blockage occurs, preventing an overflow in the sump. The water exits this line through a LawnScape discharge point at the end.
Now that the water had somewhere to go, it was time to prevent it from causing problems in the interior of the space. To start the installation of a vapor barrier, we laid down a Drainage Matting on the floor. This holds any moisture underneath itself, while still allowing the water to flow to the sump. The entire space was then encapsulated with a CleanSpace liner to finish the vapor barrier. This plastic covering completely locks out moisture, maintaining a dry interior. To clear out any moisture remaining in the air, we installed a SaniDry XP dehumidifier. This will pull the moisture from the air, passing it off to the pump for removal.
With a vapor barrier in place, and a way for the water to exit the space, this crawlspace will stay dry and odorless for years to come! This homeowner no longer needs to suffer from a bad smell.
