CleanSpace Eliminates Crawlspace Smell in Milford, ME
Challenge
Melanie of Milford, ME was having trouble with her crawlspace. A smell had been spreading through her home due to the moisture gathering in the space, and she needed something done about it. She soon called TC Hafford Basement Systems and we sent out our crew to get the job done.
Solution
Once we were on the scene, we needed to identify the cause of the problem. The crawlspace had nothing but dirt walls and a dirt floor protecting it from moisture, which didn’t help at all. The water can leak in extremely easily, and this moisture build up is what causes the smell to propagate throughout the house. To stop this, we began by installing a SmartSump sump pump in the natural low point of the floor. This way, when moisture does enter the space, it will flow down to the sump and be removed.
Next, we needed a way to help keep moisture out to begin with. To achieve this, the crawlspace needed a vapor barrier put in place. The vapor began with us laying down a Drainage Matting on the floor on the crawlspace. This matting supplies a surface insulating between the dirt and the floor, as well as a way to hold back moisture until it drains away. We then encapsulated the space with a CleanSpace Liner. This liner, being made of plastic, is impassable to water. The With both the walls and floor covered, the moisture will no longer be able to reach the interior. Now any moisture will end up in the sump, and be removed from the crawlspace by force.
Without moisture building up in her crawlspace, the smell won’t be bothering Melanie any longer. This crawlspace should remain water-free for many years to come!
