Woolwich, ME Crawlspace Receives CleanSpace Vapor Barrier
Challenge
Diane in Woolwich was plagued by a damp crawlspace. Rain typically meant moisture would start building up beneath her home. Seeking help before the problem worsened, Diane called TC Hafford Basement Systems to keep her crawlspace safe.
Solution
In order to keep this crawlspace dry, we needed to keep the water out. We started this project by digging a sump in the floor of the crawlspace, a place where the gathering water would naturally flow. We then installed a SmartSump within this new sump, to take the gathered water and push it up and out of the crawlspace through a PVC discharge line. Following this line outside, we attached an IceGuard section just as the piping exited the home. The IceGuard allows any trapped water to escape the pipe through holes, preventing an overflow in the sump. The water then travels down the pipe to the LawnScape discharge point at the end.
Moving back into the crawlspace, the next step was to install a vapor barrier to keep the moisture from reaching the interior of the crawlspace. We started this process with a Drainage Matting. This is laid across the floor of the crawlspace, and holds any moisture underneath it. This allows time for the water to drain back into the soil, once the pressure in the soil has died down. Next, we encapsulated the space with a CleanSpace liner. This liner is made of plastic, and it tightly covers the walls and floor of the crawlspace. Now any moisture that would have passed through the walls into the interior of the space will be stopped short as it reaches the CleanSpace. This locks out the moisture, never allowing it to reach the interior of the crawlspace.
Now this homeowner is worry-free about their crawlspace. No moisture will be finding its way into this crawlspace any time soon.
