Standish, ME Receives a Much Deeded Vapor Barrier
Challenge
A wet crawlspace can be a problem for a number of reasons. For this homeowner in Standish, ME, the main issue was the smell. A musty odor would permeate through the home after a rain storm, bothering the homeowner. The soon called TC Hafford Basement Systems to have something done about it!
Solution
To help with the waterproofing of this crawlspace, we began by re-grading the floor to level it out and remove any debris. This gave us a good, even floor to work with. We then installed a SmartSump sump pump in the floor to remove any water gathering in the space. The water, once pushed up and out through the PVC discharge line, passes through the IceGuard pipe piece on the exterior of the home. This special piece allows water to exit through holes in the sides if ice or any other debris blocks the lower end of the pipe.
Next, we needed to install the vapor barrier. To do so, we laid a Drainage Matting around the inside perimeter of the crawlspace. This covered the wall/floor joint, and is in place to hold back moisture, giving it time to drain away back into the ground. We then encapsulated the crawlspace with a CleanSpace liner. This liner is made of a thin plastic sheet which locks out moisture, giving it one path to follow, and that is out through the sump. We finished this crawlspace with a SaniDry CX dehumidifier. This will take the moisture out of the air, handing it off to the SmartSump for removal.
Now with a new sump system and a vapor barrier in place, this Standish homeowner will never experience a musty smell coming from their crawlspace again!
