Sedgwick, ME Crawlspace Given Proper CleanSpace Vapor Barrier
Challenge
A homeowner in Sedgwick, ME had a crawlspace which would always take on water after any rainfall. This was due to the dirt walls, which didn’t do much to stop any moisture. With a smell beginning to emanate into the home, the homeowner contacted TC Hafford Basement Systems to have the problem dealt with.
Solution
Upon arriving at the home, the installation crew began working right away. They started by installing a SuperSump sump pump in the natural low-point of the crawlspace. This way any water entering would flow here and be pumped out without staying standing on the floor. This pump forces the water up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. Exiting the home through this line, the water passes through an IceGuard pipe section just outside the home. This piece of piping has special holes built into it which would allow any trapped water to escape. The holes do not affect normal water flow but would prevent an overflow in the sump in the event of a blockage.
Next, a Drainage Matting was laid across the floor of the crawlspace. This mat will help keep water on the floor from entering the air within the space, while still allow for the moisture to flow beneath it. This will enable the water to drain away without causing more negative problems within the space. Finally, the space was encapsulated using a CleanSpace liner. The CleanSpace is a thin plastic sheet which covers all of the walls as well as the floor. Once covered like this, no more moisture will be able to enter the atmosphere within the space whatsoever.
With an exit point for any built-up water and a vapor barrier in place, this homeowners’ moisture troubles are a thing of the past! The musty smell will clear up in no time as well.
