Damp Crawlspace In Sullivan, ME Protected Using CleanSpace
Challenge
A homeowner in Sullivan, ME had been living with a musty smell in their home for quite some time. Tired of living with this smell, the homeowner looked into getting something done about it. With a damp crawlspace at the root of the problem, this homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems to get the job done.
Solution
Upon arrival, it was obvious what needed to be done in this basement. Without a proper barrier in place, any moisture in the surrounding soil could enter with ease. To help reduce build-up on the surface of the crawlspace floor, our crew installed a SmartSump sump pump in the natural low-point of the floor. This sump will remove the water from the crawlspace through a PVC discharge line. We then began the installation of a vapor barrier by laying a Drainage Matting across the floor. This mat holds moisture beneath itself, while still allowing it to move around and drain away through the SmartSump.
We then finished the vapor barrier by encapsulating the space with a CleanSpace liner. This liner covers all of the walls, as well as the floor. Being made of a thin plastic, this cover completely locks out any and all moisture that would have otherwise found its way into the atmosphere within the crawlspace. We then installed a SaniDry XP dehumidifier in the space to remove any existing moisture in the air. This will eliminate the chance for mold growth and take care of any smell spreading throughout the home. The water taken in by the SaniDry is handed to the sump for removal while the dried air is circulated back into the crawlspace.
Outside the home, we made two final additions to the discharge line before we were finished with this home. The first was an IceGuard pipe piece. This piece has holes built into it which allow any trapped water to escape the line. This will prevent an overflow in the crawlspace if the line becomes blocked by ice or other debris. We then ended the line with a LawnScape discharge point. The water exits here a safe distance from the home. This water will no longer pose a problem for this homeowner.
With the new systems in place, this crawlspace should stay dry for many years to come. This homeowner will no longer need to live with a musty smell emanating throughout their home.
