Proper Vapor Barrier Keeps Hancock, ME Crawlspace Dry

Challenge

A homeowner in Hancock, ME had been suffering from a nasty smell which had been emanating throughout their home. This smell had been coming from the crawlspace beneath the home. To put an end to this smell, the homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems.

Solution

Upon arriving at the home, our crew inspected the space to see just what needed to be done to fix the problem the homeowner had been having. The dirt around the crawlspace was not helping the problem, and easily allowed any moisture to pass through into the crawlspace. Without a proper vapor barrier, this space would continue to take on moisture. To help with the installation of a vapor barrier, we re-graded the dirt floor to level it out. This removed any debris that would have been in the way.

To begin the installation of the vapor barrier we laid down a Drainage Matting across the crawlspace floor. This mat holds moisture beneath itself, preventing it from reaching the atmosphere within the space. This mat, however, has enough space beneath itself to allow any water to continue to flow and find the best drainage point. We then encapsulated the space with a CleanSpace liner. This covers all of the walls, as well as the floor. The CleanSpace completely locks out moisture, keeping the interior free of airborne water. This vapor barrier will eliminate any moisture trying to enter the air within the space, causing the smell.

With a vapor barrier in place, this homeowner will no longer need to suffer from a musty smell. Without a damp atmosphere, the smell should dissipate shortly after we finished.
