Pittsfield, ME Crawlspace Protected From Mold Growth With CleanSpace
Challenge
A homeowner in Pittsfield, ME had been suffering from a smell emanating from their crawlspace for some weeks. Worried this smell might be coming from mold due to a moisture problem, the homeowner needed a way to keep the space dry. To get the job done, they called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
Upon arriving at the home, it was apparent why the crawlspace was suffering from moist conditions. There was no barrier in place to keep the moisture from coming in through the dirt. To put an end to this, we began the installation of a vapor barrier. This started with a Drainage Matting laid across the floor of the crawlspace. This mat will prevent the moisture from entering the atmosphere of the space where it could spread and feed mold. There is enough space beneath the mat, however, for the moisture to flow to the best suited location for drainage. The vapor barrier was finished when we encapsulated the space with a CleanSpace liner. The CleanSpace covers all of the walls, as well as the floor, tightly. This plastic sheet locks out moisture, keeping any water from entering the interior of the space.
Now that the vapor barrier was in place, it was time to deal with the existing moisture in the crawlspace atmosphere, and any more than might somehow find a way in. To do this, we installed a SaniDry CX dehumidifier. This dehumidifier will take in the air surrounding itself, and pull the moisture from it. This moisture is passed on to a Condensate pump which removes the water from the home. The dried air is then circulated back into the crawlspace. This creates a cycle which continues until the space is completely moisture-free.
With their new vapor barrier and dehumidifier in place, this homeowner no longer need to worry about a mold problem. Without moisture to thrive off of, no mold will be able to survive.
