Vapor Barrier Protects Saint Albans, ME Crawlspace From Moisture
Challenge
A homeowner in Saint Albans, ME was having trouble with moisture gathering in their crawlspace. A smell emanating from the space was an indication of the beginning of mold growth, and the homeowner wanted this stopped before it spread. To put an end to this moisture problem, they called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
The first thing that needed to bee done within this crawlspace once our crew arrived was a Re-Grading of the floor. This process helps to flatten out the surface we are working on, while also removing some debris that might have gotten in the way of the vapor barrier. After the floor was level, we began the installation of the vapor barrier by laying down a Drainage Matting. This mat will hold moisture beneath itself, preventing it from reaching the interior atmosphere of the space. This trapped water is then free to flow to where it will most easily drain away, and out of the crawlspace.
With the first layer down, we then finished the vapor barrier by encapsulating the space with a CleanSpace liner. This liner is made of plastic, and covers all of the walls, as well as the floor. With this barrier in the way, no moisture coming in from the walls or floor will have a chance of entering the interior of the space. Keeping the air in the space free of moisture is a sure-fire way to eliminate any mold problem and clear away the musty smell. We finished this project by installing a SaniDry CX dehumidifier to completely dry the space. This device will pull in the moist air, and remove the moisture from it. The collected water exits the home through a discharge line, while the dried air is circulated back throughout the crawlspace.
With a vapor barrier holding back moisture and a SaniDry maintaining a dry atmosphere, this homeowners’ moisture problem is a thing of the past! No more moisture will be lingering within this crawlspace any time soon.
