Vapor Barrier Saves Livermore Falls, ME Crawlspace From Nasty Smell
Challenge
A homeowner in Livermore Falls, ME had been having trouble with the crawlspace beneath their home. A smell had been rising out of the space lately, clearly a sign of a moisture problem. To have this problem dealt with, they called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
After our crew arrived, they began waterproofing the space right away. To do this, they started by re-grading the flood of the space. This leveled out the terrain within the space, while also removing some debris to help with the installation of the waterproofing. After the space was cleared, we installed a SmartDrain in the floor, at the natural low-point. This allows any water on the floor surface to flow out of the crawlspace through the SmartDrain. The water exiting here is carried through a PVC discharge line a safe distance from the home before being deposited onto the ground.
Next, we laid a proper vapor barrier across the space. We encapsulated the crawlspace with a CleanSpace liner to keep any moisture out of the interior. This will drastically reduce the amount of moisture entering the atmosphere of the space by locking it beneath the thin plastic sheet. Finally, we installed a SaniDry XP dehumidifier in the space to pull the existing moisture out of the air. This collected water is then passed to the SmartDrain for removal. The dried air is circulated back out into the crawlspace.
With a dried crawlspace, and a vapor barrier in place, this homeowner should no longer need to put up with a musty smell. Any moisture entering the space should quickly drain away.
