Proper Vapor Barrier Seals Moisture Out of Winter Harbor, ME Crawlspace
Challenge
A homeowner in Winter Harbor, ME was living with an unpleasant smell. Having been putting up with the smell, the homeowner knew something needed to be done once they found the source of the smell was their crawlspace. To get the job done, they called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
To keep this crawlspace water-free, we needed to give the space both a way to drain the water and a way to keep the water out. For starters, we installed a SmartPipe drainage system. This pipe will allow the water on the surface of the floor to have an exit to flow through. This removes a good amount of the water that was entering the air in the first place and causing the smell. Next, to assist with the homes insulation we filled the rim joists using Spray Foam. This will help the homeowner with temperature control costs in the future.
Finally, we needed to give the space a proper vapor barrier. We began this by laying a Drainage Matting across the floor of the crawlspace. This matting holds water beneath itself, allowing it to drain away back into the soil and through the piping. This helps prevent the moisture from entering the air, keeping the space smell-free. We then encapsulated the crawlspace with a CleanSpace liner. This completely seals moisture out of the crawlspace, keeping the air dry and the eliminating the smell.
With their new vapor barrier in place, this homeowner is now living without a musty smelling home. Moisture shouldn’t be a problem for this crawlspace anymore!
