Monhegan, ME Crawlspace Kept Dry Using CleanSpace
Challenge
A homeowner in Monhegan, ME had a crawlspace without a vapor barrier. This gave water very easy access to the interior of the space. Water in a crawlspace can lead to mold growth, which in turn could cause a bad smell, or even health problems for the homeowner. To have the water sealed out, they called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
Once our crew arrived at the basement, it was obvious the space desperately needed a vapor barrier installed. To begin, we laid a Drainage matting across the floor. This will hold the moisture beneath itself, allowing it to exit through the drain in the floor without being able to reach the interior. Next, to hold back moisture coming in from the walls, we encapsulated the space with a CleanSpace liner. This liner is made of a thin plastic which covers all of the walls as well as the floor. This prevents moisture from ever reaching the atmosphere of the space where it could travel into the air and continue to cause moisture problems.
To finish the vapor barrier and completely seal out any moisture, we installed Wrap Piers around the support pillars within the crawlspace. These wrap around the supports and act as a barrier to keep moisture away, preventing damage to the home. We then installed a SaniDry CX dehumidifier to take in the already moist air from the crawlspace and dry it out. The dry air is circulated back into the space while the moisture is deposited through the drain where it exits the home.
With a proper vapor barrier installed, this homeowner no longer needs to worry about any health concerns or structure damage that might have arisen from their damp crawlspace. No moisture will be able to gather in this crawlspace anymore!
