Southport, ME Crawlspace Receives Proper Vapor Barrier
Challenge
A homeowner in Southport, ME began to notice a smell emanating from their crawlspace. It was clearly a moisture problem, but they couldn’t quite stop the problem on their own with just a sump installed. They soon called TC Hafford Basement Systems and we were on the job!
Solution
Once our crew arrived, it was obvious the space was going to need a proper vapor barrier to keep out the moisture. We started by laying down a Drainage Matting on the floor of the space. The Drainage Matting holds water beneath itself while still allowing it to flow. This lets the water collect in the sump for removal while preventing it from entering the atmosphere of the space. We then encapsulated the entire space with a CleanSpace liner. The CleanSpace is a plastic sheet which covers all of the walls and the floor, locking out moisture, again preventing it from entering the atmosphere.
Now that the vapor barrier had been installed, almost no new moisture would be able to enter the space, but there was still an existing moisture problem in the air. With the sump taking in the moisture on the floor, all that was left to do was to remove the moisture from the air. To do this, we installed a SaniDry CX dehumidifier. The SaniDry will take in the surrounding air, and remove the moisture from it, passing this moisture to the sump for removal. The now dry air is pushed back out into the space where it forces more dry air back towards the SaniDry. This cycle continues until the space is completely moisture free.
With a proper vapor barrier installed and a dehumidifier in place, the smell in this crawlspace should be eliminated in no time. This homeowner will no longer need to worry about moisture problems in their crawlspace in the future.
