Bremen, ME Crawlspace Receives Much Needed Vapor Barrier
Challenge
A homeowner in Bremen, ME suffered from a wet crawlspace. It wasn’t too bad until the smell started to spread throughout the home. Needing the problem solved as soon as possible, this homeowner came to the professionals, TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
To start off the waterproofing of this crawlspace, we needed to give the water a place to escape through. We installed a SmartDrain in the natural low-point of the crawlspace to collect the water forming on the floor. This will allow the water an escape route, instead of sitting on the floor slowly draining into the ground, and negatively affecting the atmosphere of the space. To begin a vapor barrier, and assist the SmartDrain, we laid down a Drainage Matting on the floor of the space. This mat will hold back moisture, while allowing the water to continue to flow freely exiting through the drain.
With the initial lines of defense in place, we then worked on finishing the vapor barrier. To do this, we encapsulated the crawlspace with a CleanSpace liner. This is a thin plastic sheet that covers all of the walls, as well as the floor. The complete vapor barrier completely locks out moisture trying to enter the space, allowing any that would have previously to drain away through the SmartDrain. We then finished the project by installing a SaniDry CX dehumidifier. The SaniDry will take in the moist air from the crawlspace, pull out the moisture, and pump the dry air back into the space. This creates a cycle, circulating air until all of the moisture has been removed. The removed moisture is handed to the SmartDrain for removal.
With a proper vapor barrier and a drainage system in place, the moisture problems in this crawlspace are a thing of the past! This homeowner now has peace of mind whenever rain begins to fall.
