Proper Vapor Barrier Installed In Cushing, ME Crawlspace
Challenge
A wet crawlspace can cause problems for a homeowner besides just damp conditions. Water damage and even health concerns can stem from mold growth. Seeking to have their wet crawlspace dried before any serious issues arose, this Cushing, ME couple contacted TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
To help keep the water levels in this crawlspace to a minimum, the space was going to need a drainage point. We dug out a spot and installed a SmartDrain in the natural low-point of the floor. This will collect the moisture as it comes into the crawlspace and let it exit the space before it can cause problems. Following the discharge line outside, we attached an IceGuard pipe section just as the line left the home. This special piece of pipe is built with holes. These holes don’t affect the normal water flow, but will allow water to escape in the event of a blockage. This prevents the drain from overflowing.
Now that the water has somewhere to go, we needed to install a vapor barrier to keep moisture out of the air. We started this by laying down a Drainage Matting. This mat will allow for water to flow beneath it to the drain, while not allowing any moisture to reach the surface and spread into the air. Next, we encapsulated the space with a CleanSpace liner. This is a thin plastic sheet that tightly covers the walls and floor of the space. The CleanSpace completely locks out any moisture that might get passed the other products. This forms a vapor barrier that moisture will not be able to get around, and it will be forced to exit the space through the SmartDrain.
Now this couple can rest assured their crawlspace will not be the cause of any health concerns, nor will any water damage be inflicted on the home. This new vapor barrier will keep out moisture for years to come!
