Proper Vapor Barrier Saves Belgrade, ME Crawlspace From Moisture & Mold
Challenge
A wet crawlspace can be a nuisance, but it could even lead to health concerns for the homeowner. Looking to have their wet crawlspace waterproofed, this Belgrade, ME homeowner contacted TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
The crawlspace had no vapor barrier in place, and any moisture in the surrounding soil could easily leak into the space. In order to keep the water out, a vapor barrier needed to be installed. We began by laying down a Drainage Matting, which would hold any water beneath it, allowing it time to drain away into the soil. We then encapsulated the crawlspace with a CleanSpace Liner. This liner is the final piece of the vapor barrier, and completely seals out any moisture that would have otherwise made it into the crawlspace. Now any moisture trying to enter will be held back, until it is able to drain away without affecting the crawlspace.
Now that the vapor barrier was in place, most moisture would be kept out of the crawlspace. But there is already moisture in the air, and it is possible for more moisture to enter from above, where there is no barrier. This moisture in the air is plenty for any would-be mold growth, which is exactly what this homeowner was trying to avoid. To combat this, we installed a SaniDry CX dehumidifier. This device will take in the air from the crawlspace, drying it out and pushing it back into the space. This creates a cycle, where the dry air forces moist air back toward the SaniDry. After not too long, the crawlspace atmosphere is healthy and dry! No mold will be able to sustain itself in these conditions.
Now this homeowner is proud of their crawlspace. No moisture will be able to cause problems for this crawlspace again!
