New Vapor Barrier Keeps Poland, ME Crawlspace Healthy & Dry
Challenge
A homeowner in Poland, ME was tired of occasionally catching a musty smell coming from their crawlspace after a rainfall. To deal with both this smell, and the moisture problem in general, they contacted TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
The crawlspace in this home lacked a vapor barrier. This allowed any moisture to easily seep in through the ground. In order to keep this space dry, we needed to install a vapor barrier. We started by laying a Drainage Matting over the wall/floor joint. This holds back a portion of the moisture coming through, and allows it to drain away back into the ground. Next, we encapsulated the crawlspace with a CleanSpace Liner. This liner locks out any moisture trying to leak in through the floor or walls, preventing said moisture from pooling up in the space and causing problems.
Now that the majority of the moisture will never make it inside the crawlspace, we were almost done. We now needed to address the moisture content in the atmosphere of the crawlspace. To do this, we installed a SaniDry CX dehumidifier. This takes in the air within the crawlspace, removes the moisture, and pushes it back out into the crawlspace. This creates a pressure which pulls more moist air closer to the SaniDry. This cycle continues until all of the moisture in the atmosphere has also been eliminated from the crawlspace.
Now with a new vapor barrier and a dehumidifier in place, the musty smells are no more. This homeowner is now proud of their dry, healthy crawlspace.
