Sump Upgrade & PowerBrace Installation Protect Portage, ME Basement
Challenge
A homeowner living in Portage, ME needed some work done on their basement. Not only was space regularly found with standing water after any rainfall, but one of the walls was beginning to bow inward. Worried about flooding and the potential for a cave in, the homeowner searched for a solution. When they found TC Hafford Basement Systems they knew they found the right people for the job and gave us a call!
Solution
Once our installation crew arrived at the home, they began work on the bowing wall first. To move the wall back into its original alignment and keep it from collapsing, we drilled holes in a horizontal line along the wall These holes then had PowerBraces inserted into them. From outside the home, holes were dug into the soil behind the wall. Geo-Lock Anchor plates were placed in these holes and attached to the PowerBrace rods. Then from inside the house, plates were attached to the interior ends of the rods, where they were tightened until the wall was slowly realigned with its original position. These braces will keep the wall from bowing inward in the future.
Next, to waterproof the basement floor, a sump pump needed to be installed. To handle the water-removal, we installed a SuperSump sump pump in the floor of this basement. This device will take in the water gathering on the floor, forcing it out of the home through a PVC discharge line. The SuperSump is capable of moving up to 2,650 gallons of water every hour. This will keep any amount of incoming water at bay. To protect the sump from an overflow due to the discharge line becoming clogged, an IceGuard pipe segment was attached to the line just outside the home. This section of pipe has special holes built into it which allow for trapped water to escape without causing an overflow. This will keep the basement safe if ice or other debris blocks the line.
With their new installation in place, this homeowner now has two fewer problems to worry about. The SuperSump and PowerBrace system will keep this basement safe for years to come!
