WaterGuard Waterproofing Protects Southport, ME Basement
Challenge
A homeowner who lived in Southport, ME had been living with a damp basement. With no concrete floor in place, the dirt surroundings of this basement made it easy for moisture in the soil to flow into this home and cause problems. Worried water damage might affect their home, the homeowner sought solutions to this leakage online. To have the space waterproofed properly, they called TC Hafford Basement Systems and we were on the job!
Solution
Once our installation crew arrived at the home, they were able to begin work on the space right away. To give the basement a proper floor, while helping protect from leakage, a concrete slab was poured on the dirt. Concrete, however, is not fully waterproof on its own and needed a little help. To waterproof this slab, WaterGuard piping was installed around the perimeter of the slab, just beneath the surface. Concealed within the floor, the WaterGuard piping will take in any leaking moisture, keeping it from reaching the surface. This collected moisture is transported beneath the floor to the sump for removal from the home.
To take care of the water removal, a SmartSump sump pump was installed in the new basement floor. This sump will receive water from the WaterGuard and force it out of the home through a PVC discharge line that carries the water away from the home. The SmartSump requires power to operate, so a power-outage could cause flooding. To prevent this, an UltraSump backup battery was attached. This will allow the SmartSump to continue water removal for up to 11,000 gallons. This should protect the home from nearly any heavy storm.
Outside the home, there were two finishing additions to the discharge line we made before finishing the job. The first addition was an IceGuard pipe segment attached right after the line left the home. This piece has special holes built into the sides. These holes allow for trapped water to escape so that if/when ice or debris blocks the line the water doesn’t back up and overflow into the basement. Lastly, the end of the line received a LawnScape discharge port. The water exits through this piece, draining away into the ground far enough from the home to not cause further problems for the homeowner.
With these improvements installed in their basement, this homeowner will no longer need to worry about water damage taking root in their basement. The WaterGuard piping will remove any moisture before it is able to become a problem.
