Stetson, ME Basement Kept Dry Using Proper Sealant
Challenge
A homeowner in Stetson, ME had been living with a problem in their basement. Some cracks had opened up across their concrete walls. These cracks were allowing outside moisture to easily leak in through the walls. Unsure how to stop the moisture from leaking in through these cracks on their own, the homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems to get the job done.
Solution
Once our installation crew arrived at the home, they first began work on the easier of the two cracks. This began with the crack being brushed clear of debris using a coarse brush. Then FlexiSpan was used to seal the crack. This process starts with an initial layer of sealant being applied within the crack. Next, a foam matting is placed over this sealant to give the FlexiSpan its flexible nature, as the name suggests. Finally, the foam is covered in a layer of sealant, completing the FlexiSpan. This structure completely locks out moisture from entering through this crack, while maintaining some flexibility to adapt to slight shifts in the shape of the crack.
Moving to the other, more difficult crack, our crew utilized a Polyurethane Injection. Because this crack ran behind several support pillars on the wall, FlexiSpan was not a viable solution for this crack. To start this fix, a coat of sealant was applied over the top of the crack, with special plugs being placed every few inches along the length of the crack. After drying in place, these plugs are opened, and Polyurethane is injected into the interior of the crack. This fills the crack completely, drying in place and sealing out moisture from leaking in through this crack in the future. After each injection, the plugs are re-sealed to hold the sealant inside.
With these new seals applied to their basement walls, this homeowner will no longer need to live with water leaking into their home. The FlexiSpan & Polyurethane Injection will keep this basement floor dry for many years to come!
