Dirt Basement in Penobscot, ME Waterproofed with New Slab
Challenge
A couple living in Penobscot, ME had been living with a dirt basement for quite some time. Without any form of barrier in place, their basement would regularly take on outside moisture from rain or melting snow. Tired of the conditions beneath their home, these homeowners sought a solution online. Once they came across TC Hafford Basement Systems they knew they found the right people for the job. Once we got the call, our crew was dispatched to get the job done.
Solution
Once our installation crew arrived at the home, they began work on the basement right away. To start, a concrete slab was poured across the dirt floor to give the basement a proper floor. While pouring this new slab, WaterGuard piping was installed around the perimeter of the basement, just beneath the surface of the floor. Once the concrete dries, it is not impervious to leaking moisture, this is where the WaterGuard pipes come in. They capture the water as it leaks through the floor, guiding the collected water to the sump for removal. Now no more water will be reaching the surface of this basement floor in the future.
To handle the water removal, we installed a TripleSafe sump pump in the basement floor. This device houses three pumps. The first two pumps handle the bulk of the water needing to be removed from the basement, with the secondary only activating when the primary needs help with the amount of water. The third pump is a battery-operated backup pump for when the home loses power. This will keep the basement dry in the harshest weather. Finally, we installed a SaniDry XP dehumidifier to take care of the existing moisture in the atmosphere of the basement. This will eliminate any potential moisture problems such as mold growth which is occasionally caused by airborne moisture. The SaniDry pulls in the moist air, separating the water from it and passing the water to the sump for removal. The dried air is then circulated back into the basement to allow for more moist air to be dealt with.
With these new improvements to their basement, these homeowners will no longer need to worry about damp conditions in their basement. The WaterGuard & TripleSafe combination will keep this basement dry for many years to come!
