Mount Vernon, ME Home Completely Waterproofed
Challenge
A homeowner in Mount Vernon, ME owned a home with a rather damp basement and crawlspace beneath it. Wanting these spaces properly dealt with due to a musty smell forming, the homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems to get their free estimate on what work we could do for them.
Solution
As soon as the TC Hafford installation crew arrived at the home they began work right away on the crawlspace first. To begin, the space was graded to flatten out the work space and remove any debris. A Drainage Matting was then laid across the floor of the crawlspace. This mat holds water beneath itself while allowing the water room to flow toward the best place to drain back into the ground. We then completed the crawlspace vapor barrier with the encapsulation of the space using a CleanSpace liner. This plastic sheet covers all of the walls as well as the floor. With the vapor barrier complete, no new moisture will be leaking into this crawlspace any time soon.
Moving to the basement, our crew excavated a shallow trench into the perimeter of the concrete floor. A WaterGuard piping system was then laid within the trench and covered over with a fresh coat of concrete. Underneath the surface of the floor, the WaterGuard captures water that otherwise would have leaked into the basement through the tiny cracks within the concrete. The trapped water is guided to the sump in the floor, where we installed a SuperSump sump pump to handle water-removal. The SuperSump can pump water at a rate of 2,650 gallons per hour up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line.
Following this discharge line outside, we made two final additions before our crew was finished. The first of these additions was the IceGuard pipe section added just after the line exits the home. This piece has special holes built into it to allow for trapped water to escape. This prevents an overflow in the line if ice or other debris blocks the way. The end of the line was then capped with a LawnScape discharge port. This is where the water will escape onto the ground a safe distance from the home never to bother this homeowner again.
With their new basement system in place this homeowner can expect to never experience a damp basement or crawlspace again! With the WaterGuard piping in place, water will no longer be able to even reach the surface of their basement floor.
