CleanSpace Vapor Barrier Protects Phippsburg, ME Crawlspace From Moisture

Challenge

A homeowner in Phippsburg, ME had begun to notice an unpleasant musty smell in his home. This smell was coming from their crawlspace beneath the home. This space, with dirt surroundings, was an easy target for leaking water and had become very damp over time. Unsure how to stop this moisture on their own, the homeowner called the professionals at TC Hafford Basement Systems to get the space waterproofed.

Solution

As soon as our installation crew arrived at the home they went to the crawlspace to begin work. To start, a SmartDrain sump pump was installed in the floor of the crawlspace. This device will take in any water gathering on the surface of the floor and force it out of the home through a PVC discharge line. We then began the installation of a vapor barrier by laying a Drainage Matting across the floor. This will hold inbound moisture on the floors surface, allowing it enough space to continue to flow across the floor surface. This will help keep the atmosphere free of moisture while allow any leakage to flow to the sump and be removed.

We then completed the vapor barrier by encapsulating the space with a CleanSpace liner. This liner covers all of the walls as well as the floor. The thin plastic sheet that makes up the CleanSpace will no longer allow any moisture to leak through from these areas to the interior of the crawlspace. Atop the vapor barrier, we installed a SaniDry CX dehumidifier. This device will pull in the surrounding air, pull the moisture from it, and recirculate the air back into the crawlspace. The water collected in the SaniDry is passed on to the sump for removal from the home.

With these new additions to their crawlspace, this homeowner will soon no longer have a musty smell to deal with. The CleanSpace barrier will ensure any moisture trying to leak in remains locked outside the interior of the crawlspace for many years into the future.
