Portland, ME Basement Protected From Water Damage With WaterGuard
Challenge
After suffering from a wet basement for many months, a Portland, ME homeowner finally decided it was time to do something about it. The water leaking into the basement could cause permanent damage to the home, and also to the homeowners’ belongings. To have the space kept safe from such damage, they called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
Even though this homeowner had a concrete foundation, water was still leaking through the tiny pores in the concrete. Once our crew arrived at the home, stopping this leakage was their first priority. To achieve this, we dug a shallow trench into the floor around the perimeter of the basement. Within this trench, we laid WaterGuard piping. These pipes were then buried beneath a fresh layer of cement. Operating under the surface, the WaterGuard will capture any moisture traveling in through the foundation.
The water trapped within the WaterGuard is then guided to the sump where it is removed from the home. To handle the water-removal, we installed a SuperSump sump pump. This pump will force the water up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. With a pumping rate of 2,650 gallons every hour, this device is more than enough to keep this basement free of water.
On the exterior of the home, the discharge line carries the water away from the home where it is released onto the ground through a LawnScape piece on the end. Here the water is far enough from the home to not cause any further problems. To protect the sump from an overflow, we attached an IceGuard pipe piece to the discharge line just outside the home. Now if ice or other debris blocks the line, the water will escape through special holes in the sides rather than backing up the SuperSump.
With their new basement system in place, this homeowner can now use their basement however they want without worrying about water damage. The WaterGuard piping will ensure this home remains dry for many years to come!
