Wet Aurora, ME Basement Sealed With FlexiSpan
Challenge
A homeowner in Aurora, ME contacted TC Hafford with a problem. A crack in their basement had been leaking water in, which was gathering on the floor. To put an end to this water, they needed professional help and we had just the solution they needed!
Solution
After an inspection of the basement, the water was not just leaking in through the crack. The concrete foundation was also part of the problem. Since concrete is not completely waterproof on its own, we began by digging out a trench around the outer perimeter of the floor. We then buried a WaterGuard piping system beneath a fresh layer of cement, surrounding the floor. This system will capture any water traveling through the concrete, preventing it from reaching the surface and guiding it to the sump within the basement where it will be removed from the home.
Next, we moved to the crack to stop it from leaking in water as well. To begin the sealing of the crack, we brushed away any debris with a coarse brush. For this crack, we used FlexiSpan, which is a three-step process. The first step was to apply a preliminary layer of sealant within the crack. This was then covered over with a foam matting. This mat is the backbone of the FlexiSpan and gives it its flexible nature. The FlexiSpan was finished with a final layer of sealant laid over the top of the mat. This will now hold any moisture out and conform to any shifting in the crack.
With a newly waterproofed basement, this homeowner can rest assured their belongings are safe from water damage. The FlexiSpan & WaterGuard will ensure this basement remains dry for many years to come!
