East Wilton, ME Basement Protected From Water Damage With WaterGuard
Challenge
A homeowner in East Wilton, ME was having a problem with their basement. Rainwater would somehow slip into the space without a problem. This flooding needed to be stopped, because the homeowner was using the space for storage. To have the leaking stopped, the homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
When the crew arrived at the home, it was obvious the problem was the concrete foundation. Concrete is not completely waterproof on its own. To remedy this problem, we began by digging out a trench around the outer perimeter of the basement floor. In this trench, we laid down WaterGuard piping, covering it over with more cement. These pipes form a barrier inside the floor, where they will capture any moisture trying to slip through in the future. This trapped water is then guided through the pipes to the sump for removal from the basement.
To handle the water removal, the existing sump in this basement was going to need an upgrade. The crew installed a TripleSafe sump pump to take care of this need. The TripleSafe contains three pumps. The first pump will handle removing the bulk of the water, while the secondary pump will take over this water if the primary fails for any reason. This allows for repairs to be made without any down time for the sump. The third and final pump is a battery backup. This keeps the basement dry even when the home is without power. The water being pumped out of the home exits through a PVC discharge line.
Outside the home, we made two final additions before we were done. Even though the sump could handle removing all of the water, it was susceptible to overflows if the discharge line were to become blocked by ice or debris. To prevent this, we attached an IceGuard pipe piece just outside the home. This piece has holes built into it which allow for trapped water to escape while allowing for water to flow away from the home normally. The end of the line was then capped off with a LawnScape discharge point where the water exits onto the ground. This far from the home, the water should never be a problem again.
With their new basement system in place, this homeowners’ belongings are now safe from water damage! The WaterGuard piping will keep this floor dry for many years into the future.
