Dirt Basement In Sinclair, ME Waterproofed With WaterGuard
Challenge
A homeowner in Sinclair, ME had a dirt basement which they wanted to start using for storage purposes. Because of the dirt surroundings, however, outside moisture could easily enter the space. Since the risk of water damage was a problem, they needed the space waterproofed before they could use it. To have the space made ready, the homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
Once our installation crew arrived at the home, they were able to start work on the space right away. To begin, they gave the basement a solid floor. They poured a fresh slab of cement across the basement. Cement is not completely waterproof, however, so they still needed to do the waterproofing. While pouring the slab, the crew installed a WaterGuard piping system just beneath the surface, which ran around the outside edge of the basement. These pipes will capture water as it travels through the concrete, guiding it to the sump for removal before it has a chance to reach the surface.
To take care of the water removal, we installed a SuperSump sump pump in the floor. This pump will take in the water from the WaterGuard, then force it up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. The SuperSump can move over 2,600 gallons of water every hour. This will be more than enough power to keep this basement water-free. To help keep the pump going during in any weather, we attached an UltraSump backup battery. This device will give the SuperSump an extra 11,000 gallons of water-removal before needing a charge.
Following the discharge line outside, the crew made two finishing touches before they were done. First, they attached an IceGuard pipe piece to the line just as it exits the home. This piece has holes built into it, which do not affect normal water flow. The holes do, however, allow for trapped water to escape the line. This prevents an overflow in case ice or other debris blocks the line. Finally, the end of the line was given a LawnScape discharge point where the water exits onto the ground. Here, this water will never again bother this homeowner.
With their new basement system in place, this homeowner can now utilize their basement for whatever purpose they need without fear of water damage. Thanks to the WaterGuard piping, this basement will remain dry for many years to come!
