WaterGuard Protects Union, ME Basement From Water Damage
Challenge
A homeowner in Union, ME owned a dirt basement. This space, due to the high levels of moisture, was unusable. Since water could easily enter through the soil, it was almost impossible for this homeowner to do anything on their own. To have the space made usable, they called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
Without a proper floor, the space was difficult to use for storage. Not to mention the moisture that could ruin any material possessions. Once our crew arrived, they began work by pouring a fresh slab of concrete across the dirt to form a new floor. This was not an ordinary slab though. We installed WaterGuard piping around the perimeter of the floor while pouring the slab. These pipes sit just beneath the surface, and capture water as it travels through the floor due to pressure in the soil. Any water trapped in the WaterGuard is guided to the sump for removal before it can reach the surface.
Within the sump, we installed a SuperSump sump pump to take on the responsibility of the water removal. This device can handle up to 2,650 gallons of water every hour, forcing the water up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. Following this line outside, we made an adjustment to help keep the sump operating without failure. We attached an IceGuard pipe segment just outside the home, which is a special pipe with holes built into it. These holes will not affect normal water flow but will allow any water blocked by ice or other debris to escape. This will ultimately prevent an overflow in the sump from trapped water that might try and backup through the piping.
With these new systems in place, this homeowner can now use their basement for whatever purpose they choose. They will no longer need to fear water damage either!
