Dirt Thomaston, ME Basement Receives Concrete Slab & Much Needed
Challenge
A homeowner in Thomaston, ME was looking for a way to have their dirt basement finished. They wanted to use the space as a living area, but couldn’t due to the dirt floor, and damp conditions. To bring the space closer to the homeowners’ goal, they called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
To begin this job, our crew first needed to pour a fresh slab of concrete on top of the dirt. This would give the space a solid, level surface which would help the homeowner with the finishing process. While pouring this slab, we also installed a WaterGuard piping system around the perimeter, just beneath the surface of the floor. These pipes will capture any water trying to leak in through the concrete, which happens when enough pressure builds up in the surrounding soil. This trapped water is then guided through the WaterGuard to the sump for removal.
To assist the WaterGuard in capturing water, as well as to give the space a bright, clean look, we installed BrightWall wall tiles. These panels cover the walls around the basement, and will collect any moisture that might pass through the foundation. This water will then fall down the backsides of the panels into the WaterGuard. Within the sump, we installed a SuperSump sump pump to take care of the water-removal. This pump can move up to 2,650 gallons of water per hour, which it forces up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. This much power should be plenty to keep this basement water-free.
Following the discharge line outside, we made two final additions to complete the project. The first was an IceGuard pipe section added just as the line leaves the home. This piece has angled holes built into it which do not affect water flow. The holes will only allow water to escape if the line becomes blocked and the water backs up. This prevents an overflow in the sump, which would flood the basement. Finally, we ended the line with a LawnScape discharge point where the water exits onto the ground a safe distance from the home.
With a new floor, and a waterproofing system in place, this homeowner is now free to finish their basement without the fear of water damage. Their now livable space will stay protected from water related issues thanks to the WaterGuard piping!
