Bucksport, ME Basement Kept Dry With WaterGuard
Challenge
In Bucksport, ME, a homeowner had been struggling with keeping their basement floor dry. Even with a sump, the moisture would still leave the basement damp and humid. Wanting the space completely free of water, the homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
The first thing our crew needed to do upon arriving at the home was to find where the water was entering. In some basements, hydrostatic pressure builds up enough force in the surrounding soil that it pushes the moisture directly in through the concrete. To stop this from continuing in this basement, we dug a trench around the inside perimeter of the basement floor. This gave us enough space to install our WaterGuard piping which was then covered over with a fresh layer of cement. Buried beneath the floor is where the WaterGuard functions. Any moisture traveling through the concrete will flow into the WaterGuard pipes through the bottom, and flow through to the sump for removal.
With the installation of the WaterGuard, the concentration of water entering the sump at any given time would be increased. To compensate for this, we installed a SuperSump sump pump. This pump can take on and remove up to 2,650 gallons of water per hour. The water exits through a PVC discharge line, and flows away from the home. In the event the home loses power, the SuperSump received an UltraSump addition. The UltraSump is a battery which holds enough of a charge to allow for 11,000 gallons of removal before draining. This combination can battle any storm thrown at it.
Outside of the home, attached to the discharge line, we installed an IceGuard pipe piece. This piece has special holes in it, which do not affect the normal water flow. If the line were to become blocked however, these holes would allow for the water trapped in the line to easily exit the line. This prevents an overflow in the sump. The line was then ended with a LawnScape discharge point. Here the water flows out onto the ground where it drains away into the soil.
Now this homeowner can enjoy a dry basement. Their new basement system is sure to keep the space clear of moisture for many years to come!
