Houlton, ME Dirt Basement Waterproofed Properly With WaterGuard
Challenge
A homeowner in Houlton, ME owned a dirt basement. This made it easy for water to leak in. With the space being damp almost all of the time, the homeowner was looking for something to be done about it. After hearing about TC Hafford Basement Systems, they got in contact with us and we were on the job!
Solution
To start this project, we began by pouring a new concrete slab across the dirt floor. This would not only give the homeowner a solid surface to now be able to utilize the space on, but it would assist with keeping out water. Concrete, however, is not perfectly waterproof. To keep water out for good, while we were pouring the slab, we installed WaterGuard piping within. These pipes sit just beneath the surface, and follow the outside perimeter of the slab. WaterGuard pipes will capture any moisture traveling through the concrete, preventing it from reaching the surface. This trapped water is then guided through the piping to the sump where it will be removed from the basement.
To take on the water-removal, we installed a TripleSafe sump pump. The TripleSafe gets its’ name from the three pumps held within. These each serve a purpose and activate at different times. The primary and secondary pumps both handle the majority of the water, while the secondary pump will only activate should the primary pump fails to handle the water alone. The third pump is battery-operated, and will kick on to keep the basement water-free during a power outage. The water leaving through the TripleSafe follows a discharge line outside and passes through an IceGuard pipe piece just outside the home. This piece has holes built-in which allow trapped water to escape the line. This will prevent an overflow should ice or other debris form a blockage.
With a new floor and a waterproofing system in place, this homeowner now owns a dry, usable basement. Thanks to the WaterGuard this space should remain water-free for many years to come!
