Dirt Buxton, ME Basement Waterproofed With Fresh Slab & WaterGuard
Challenge
A homeowner in Buxton, ME owned a dirt basement which they weren’t able to get much use out of. Not only was this space unusable, but lately, water had been gathering on the floor. Seeking to have the space waterproofed, as well as turned into a usable space, the homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
With these two objectives in mind, our crew began work on this basement by installing a concrete slab on top of the dirt. This was no ordinary slab however, it would contain a WaterGuard piping system within it by the time we were finished pouring it. This piping system runs along the outer perimeter of the floor, resting just beneath the surface. Now any moisture trying to travel into the basement through the tiny holes in the concrete will be captured by the WaterGuard. This trapped water is then guided through the WaterGuard to the sump for removal.
With a WaterGuard system in place, there would be a greatly increased concentration of water entering the sump at any given time. To keep up with this, we installed a TripleSafe sump pump. This device contains three individual pumps which work together to keep the basement free of water. The primary and secondary pumps handle the bulk of the water, the secondary pump only activating if and when the primary pump fails for any reason. The third and final pump is a battery-operated backup pump. This pump will keep the water pumping even when the home is without power. The water exiting through the TripleSafe is forced up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line.
Following this line to the exterior of the home, we made a few additions to keep the system operating smoothly. The first of these additions was an IceGuard pipe piece. This section of pipe sits just outside the home, and has angled holes built into it. These holes do not affect the normal water flow. They will however, allow water traveling the other direction to exit the line before reaching the sump. This prevents an overflow in the sump in the event of a blockage in the line. Finally, we ended the line with a LawnScape discharge point and we were done. The water exits onto the ground here, and drains away into the earth.
This new basement system is sure to keep the homeowners’ new concrete floor dry. They can now utilize the space for their needs without needing to fear any moisture damage.
