WaterGuard Maintains Dry Farmington, ME Basement Floor
Challenge
A homeowner in Farmington, ME had been noticing a build up of moisture on their basement floor. This could pose a threat to the property, so the homeowner immediately sought out a solution. They called TC Hafford Basement Systems to have the space kept dry.
Solution
Upon arriving at the home, it was obvious the water was leaking in directly through the foundation of the home. When enough hydrostatic pressure builds up in the surrounding soil, moisture can be forced in through tiny cracks in the concrete. To stop this, we dug out a trench around the inside perimeter of the floor. We then laid 132 of WaterGuard piping down within this trench, surrounding the basement. Buried underneath a fresh layer of cement, these pipes will capture any moisture traveling into the basement from the surrounding soil. This trapped water is then guided through the pipes to the sump where it will be removed from the home.
To take on the now increased concentration of water coming from the WaterGuard piping, we installed a SuperSump sump pump in the basement floor. This pump can handle upwards of 2,650 gallons of water per hour. This water will be evacuated from the home through a PVC discharge line. To help keep the SuperSump functional under any conditions, we attached an UltraSump backup battery. This battery will keep the SuperSump pumping even if the home were to lose power. The UltraSump can give 11,000 gallons worth of pumping power before requiring another charge.
Finally, outside the home, we made two additions to the discharge line. The first was the IceGuard pipe piece. This section of pipe sits just outside the home, and has holes built into it. The holes will not affect normal water flow, but will instead allow trapped water to escape. This means that if the line were to become blocked by ice or other debris, the water would escape before overflowing the sump. The line was then ended with a LawnScape discharge point where the water exits onto the ground. The water will drain away here, never again reaching the home to bother this homeowner.
With their new basement system in place, this homeowner is happy to have a dry basement floor again. Thanks to the WaterGuard piping, no more moisture will be reaching this foundation surface!
