WaterGuard Piping Saves New Sweden, ME Basement From Water Damage
Challenge
A couple in New Sweden, ME had a basement which would regularly take on water after a rainfall. The water level would vary depending on the amount of rain, but this was not something the homeowners could allow. They soon called TC Hafford Basement Systems to take care of the problem.
Solution
Upon arriving at the home, our first priority was locating the source of the leakage. Finding this would allow us to stop the leak. The foundation had been causing the problem, with moisture leaking in due to hydrostatic pressure in the surrounding soil. To stop this, we began by digging a trench around the inside perimeter of the basement floor. We then laid our WaterGuard piping down within this trench and buried it beneath a fresh layer of cement. Inside the floor, the pipes will capture any moisture traveling by from the outside. This prevents the water from ever reaching the surface, keeping the floor dry. The trapped water is guided through the piping to the sump, where it will be removed from the home.
The water entering the sump is deposited into the SuperSump sump pump we installed. This water will be forced up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. The SuperSump can move over 2,600 gallons of water per hour, plenty of power for keeping up with the harshest of storms. Following the discharge line outside, we made two additions to assist with the water-removal. The fist was an IceGuard pipe segment, which has built-in holes. These holes will not affect typical water flow; however, they will allow trapped water to escape. This prevents an overflow in the sump if the line becomes blocked by ice. Finally, the water exits through a LawnScape discharge point where it drains into the ground a safe distance from the home.
Now this couple will never need to worry about a flooding basement again! With their new basement system in place, no more water will be gathering on this basement floor.
