WaterGuard Keeps Cumberland Center, ME Basement Water-Free
Challenge
A homeowner in Cumberland Center, ME had been living with a damp basement. Water had been leaking in through both the foundation, as well as in through a door leading outside from the basement. Looking to have the space waterproofed for future use, the homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
Once our crew arrived at the home, the first order of business was preparing to waterproof the concrete floor. To do this, we dug out a shallow trench around the inside perimeter of the floor, running along the walls. We then laid WaterGuard piping down within this trench, with a TrenchDrain attached under the problem door frame. This was all then buried beneath a fresh layer of cement, except for the drain. The TrenchDrain sits level with the floor, with an open grate facing up at the door. The WaterGuard pipes will now capture any moisture trying to travel in through the foundation, while the TrenchDrain takes in any water flowing under the door. All of this now trapped water is guided through the WaterGuard piping to the sump for removal.
With the WaterGuard in place, the concentration of water reaching the sump at any given time was going to be more than usual. This might be too much for just a sump to handle, so we installed a SuperSump sump pump to take care of this. The SuperSump can move over 2,600 gallons of water per hour, which it forces up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. Following this line outside, we made two additions to help things run smoothly. The first was an IceGuard attachment, which is a piece of pipe with built in holes. These holes do not affect normal water flow, but in the event of a blockage, the trapped water would have an escape route without backing up and overflowing the sump. Finally, we ended the line with a LawnScape discharge point. This will release the water onto the ground, a safe distance from the home, where it will never be able to reach the home again.
With their new basement system in place, this homeowner will never need to put up with a wet basement again! They can now use their basement however they please without the fear of water damage.
