Bernard, ME Basement Waterproofed Properly With WaterGuard
Challenge
A homeowner in Bernard, ME was having trouble keeping water out of their basement. Having put up with the damp conditions for long enough, they decided it was high time they had something done about it. They called TC Hafford Basement Systems and our crew was on the job!
Solution
To properly waterproof the space, we needed to first figure out how the moisture was entering. We identified the source of moisture in this basement being the foundation itself. With enough pressure in the surrounding soil, moisture can be forced in through tiny cracks and holes. To stop this water before it reached the basement, we installed a WaterGuard piping system around the perimeter of the basement floor. These pipes sit just beneath the surface buried under a fresh layer of cement. The WaterGuard pipes capture the moisture traveling through the concrete, preventing it from ever reaching the surface and guiding it away to the sump for removal.
Taking care of the water removal, is the SmartSump sump pump we installed in the basement floor. This pump takes in the collected water from the WaterGuard, and pushes it up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. To keep this sump pumping through even the worst storms, we attached an UltraSump backup battery to the SmartSump. This battery will give the SmartSump an extra 11,000 gallons worth of pumping power if and when the home loses power. This will maintain a dry basement even if the weather is bad enough to knock the power out in the home.
Outside the home, we still had two key additions to make to the discharge line. The first was the IceGuard pipe. This piece of piping is attached just as the line exits the home, and has holes built into it. These holes will not affect normal water flow. If ice or other debris blocks the line, however, the trapped water is able to escape through these holes without backing up and overflowing the sump. Finally, we capped the line with a LawnScape discharge point. This is where the water exits onto the ground, a safe distance from the home.
With a proper basement system, this homeowner will no longer need to worry about water build up in their basement. Even in the heaviest of storms, their new basement system will maintain a dry basement.
