Dirt Sumner, ME Basement Kept Dry With WaterGuard
Challenge
A wet basement is never a pleasant experience for any homeowner. Some basements are easier to deal with than others, and for this homeowner in Sumner, ME, dealing with it themselves was not an option. To take care of the dampness, they called TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
The basement at this home had a dirt floor, and would need a lot of work done to waterproof it. Since water could easily enter through the dirt, we gave the space a concrete slab to be the new floor. This slab would not be perfectly waterproof itself, so we installed a WaterGuard piping system within it. These pipes run around the outer perimeter of the slab, and will capture any moisture as it travels through the concrete towards the interior of the space. This collected water is then guided by the WaterGuard to the sump for removal.
To keep up with the amount of water being captured by the WaterGuard, we installed a TripleSafe sump pump. The TripleSafe is made up of three pumps. These three pumps are the primary, the secondary, and the backup pump. The primary handles the bulk of the water, while the secondary will only activate when the primary fails for any reason. Leaving the backup pump, which is battery-operated, for when the power in the home goes out. The TripleSafe will keep the basement free of water from now on, removing the water through a PVC discharge line.
Outside the home, we made two additions to the discharge line to help maintain a dry basement. The first was an IceGuard. The IceGuard is a piece of pipe which has built in holes. These holes do not affect normal water flow. However, if the line becomes blocked by ice or other debris, these holes will allow the trapped water to escape without backing up the TripleSafe. This prevents an overflow in the sump. Finally, we capped the line with a LawnScape discharge point. The water exits the line here, a safe distance from the home where it will never reach the basement again.
This homeowner can now rest assured their basement will remain dry through even the hardest rain storms. With their new slab, complete with basement system, moisture will no longer become a problem!
