Damp Dirt Castine, ME Basement Transformed With A Fresh Slab & WaterGuard
Challenge
Living with a dirt basement, this Castine, ME homeowner would typically find their basement with standing water after it would rain. Wanting to use the space for storage, this homeowner called TC Hafford Basement Systems to have their basement turned into a usable space.
Solution
To turn this dirt basement into a waterproofed, usable space, we needed to begin by giving it a solid floor. We installed a concrete slab to achieve this. This slab covered the dirt, but wouldn’t completely lock out moisture on its own. Since water can pass through concrete under the right conditions, we installed WaterGuard piping just beneath the surface of this slab. This piping captures any moisture trying to pass through the concrete, trapping it before it can reach the surface. This water is now transported to the sump we created within the basement.
Since this sump was newly made, it was going to need a pump. We installed a SuperSump sump pump to handle removing the water collected by the WaterGuard. The SuperSump boasts a pumping rate of 2,650 gallons of water per hour. This water is forced up and out of the home through a PVC discharge line. Attached to this line, just outside the home, is an IceGuard pipe segment. This piece of piping has built-in holes, which will allow water to escape the line under the right circumstances. This will prevent an overflow in the sump by letting water exit the line should a blockage occur. Finally, we attached a LawnScape discharge point on the end of the line. This lets the water out onto the ground a safe distance from the home.
Now this homeowner in Castine, ME can utilize their basement however they please without fear of water damage. With a clean, flat surface, storage should be a piece of cake!
