Damp Dirt Basement In Greenbush, ME Receives Much Needed Waterproofing
Challenge
A couple in Greenbush owned a dirt basement. The lack of a barrier between the ground and the interior made it an easy target for any moisture in the soil. Tired of the damp conditions, the homeowners contacted TC Hafford Basement Systems to have their basement waterproofed the right way.
Solution
In order to help prevent the moisture from so easily reaching the interior of the space, we needed to lay a proper concrete slab in the basement. This slab would act as a barrier, but concrete is not a perfect way of keeping water out, and in certain circumstances, water can leak right through. To stop this, we installed WaterGuard piping around the perimeter of the slab. This piping rests just underneath the surface of the slab, capturing the moisture as it travels through. The water trapped within the WaterGuard is then guided to the sump for removal.
We created a sump in the new slab, where all the water would end up, but this sump was going to need a pump to handle the removal. We installed a SuperSump sump pump to do just this. The SuperSump can move up to 2,650 gallons of water per hour, which is forced out of the home through a PVC discharge line. To keep the sump pumping even in the heaviest storms, we attached an UltraSump backup battery to it. The UltraSump will maintain water flow if and when the home loses power. Now no storm will be able to overpower this basement!
The discharge line leaving the home also had a purpose in keeping the basement water-free. Right where the line exits the home, we attached an IceGuard pipe segment. This special piece of pipe has built in holes. These holes will not affect the normal flow of water, but if a blockage occurs, the trapped water can escape before it backs up the sump. This prevents an overflow within the basement. Finally, we ended the line with a LawnScape discharge point. The water exits here, a safe distance from the home where it will not be able to reach the home again.
Now this couple can sit comfortably through any rainstorm knowing their new basement system will keep their property dry. They won’t need to deal with damp basement conditions again!
