New Basement System Protects Mapleton, ME Basement From Severe Flooding
Challenge
A flooding basement in Mapleton, ME was in desperate need of professional waterproofing. Unable to keep up with the flooding, the homeowner called the company they knew was right the job, TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
With water leaking in from multiple sources, this basement was going to need some heavy-duty waterproofing done. To begin, we dealt with a large crack running down one of the walls. This crack had been letting in most of the water, and it was sealed with our triple layer seal FlexiSpan. To keep the moisture levels in the air down to a healthy level, we installed a SaniDry XP dehumidifier. This will take in the moist air from the basement, then circulate dry air back into the space until all the moisture has been removed.
Now that the crack has been sealed and the air is dry, the moisture entering through the foundation itself needed to be stopped. To do so, we buried WaterGuard piping underneath the perimeter of the floor, along the walls. These pipes are buried under fresh cement, where they capture any moisture traveling through before it can reach the surface. We then covered the walls with BrightWall tiles to assist the WaterGuard in capturing water. Now if any more moisture comes through the walls, either via a small crack or tiny holes, this water will flow down the BrightWall into the WaterGuard pipes. This collected water is then guided to the sump for removal.
With a heavily increased flow of water being directed to the sump, it was going to need a powerful upgrade. To handle the water extraction, we installed a SuperSump sump pump. This pump can output 2,650 gallons of water per hour through the PVC discharge line. To keep this pump operating through any storm, we attached an UltraSump backup battery. The UltraSump gives the SuperSump an 11,000 gallons lifespan if the home were to lose power, which should take care of any typical rainstorm. Moving outside the home, we attached an IceGuard pipe section to the discharge line as it exits the basement. This special piece of pipe has built in holes which do not affect the normal water flow. But if the lower end of the line were to become blocked, by ice or other debris, the holes allow the water to escape without overflowing the sump.
With their new basement system in place, this homeowner is now free from a flooding basement. They can use this newly available space however they please, be it storage or a finished basement.
