York, ME basement kept dry and healthy by CleaSpace
Challenge
A dirt basement is an open invitation for rainwater. The subsequent flooding after a heavy shower could lead to mold growth, or damage to the supports for the home. This homeowner in York needed a solution, and fast! They called TC Hafford Basement Systems and we had our crew dispatched to take a look.
Solution
The basement had no form of vapor barrier, and was incredibly damp. To start the waterproofing, we dug out a sump, and installed a SuperSump sump pump. This pump will take the water pooling up on the floor and force it up and out of the basement through a PVC discharge line. We then attached an UltraSump backup battery to the SuperSump. This will keep it pumping even if the home loses power during an exceptionally heavy rain storm. This new sump system should be more than enough to keep the basement water free, but we still needed to reduce the moisture levels to eliminate the mold.
To achieve this goal, we encapsulated the dirt floor and walls with a CleanSpace liner. This liner is a thin plastic sheet which locks out moisture trying to leak in through the soil. Any moisture that does manage to sneak in will be trapped underneath the CleanSpace where it will be taken in by the sump and removed. We finished this project by installing a SaniDry XP dehumidifier. The SaniDry will keep the atmosphere within the basement dry by pulling moisture out of the air and feeding it to the sump for evacuation.
With a proper basement system in place, moisture will no longer be a resident of this York, ME basement!
