Vapor Barrier Protects West Newfield, ME Crawlspace From Mold
Challenge
A couple in Greenville, ME had been living with a damp crawlspace for some time. They didn’t need to visit the space much, so why should it concern them? A damp crawlspace can lead to mold growth, which in turn can negatively affect the health of the residents. To avoid these health concerns, they contacted TC Hafford Basement Systems.
Solution
To keep the crawlspace water-free, we needed to give the crawlspace a way to drain the water and a vapor barrier. To help any gathered water exit the crawlspace, we installed a SmartSump sump. This pump will take in the water on the floor and force it up and out of the space through a PVC discharge line. The discharge line is given IceGuard and LawnScape attachments on the exterior of the home. The IceGuard is built with holes that don’t affect typical water flow, but when the line becomes clogged, the trapped water can escape. This prevents an overflow in the sump. The LawnScape is where the water is released onto the ground a safe distance from the home.
We then laid a Drainage Matting on the floor to begin the vapor barrier installation. The Drainage Matting holds water underneath it, while allow it to move along the floor. This will enable the water to exit through the sump without affecting the rest of the crawlspace. The entire space was then encapsulated with a CleanSpace liner. This line covers all of the walls as well as the floor. This locks out moisture, not allowing any to pass through and gather in the atmosphere. Because even wet air can breed mold.
With the vapor barrier in place and a sump in place to remove water, this couple no longer needs to fear illness from mold growth. Without moisture to live on, the mold will die off and not be able to grow back.
